New in 0.21.6

A steadier spell menu. Skeletons that grow with you.

The spell menu now stays open while its key is held. Keyboard and mouse rebinding uses Valheim's own key mapping, including the number pad and the separate number row.

Skeleton health and damage scale with Warlock class level, alongside summon talents and Blood Magic. Existing skeletons refresh as you progress. Summoning at the limit replaces your oldest skeleton after the new summon succeeds. Warlocks with a learned summon also gain free Unsummon and Teleport Summons to Me commands.

Every class gains a defense branch: 79 nodes per tree and a level-80 cap. Finite guards grow with maximum health and class level. Defensive effects show protection being earned, used and exhausted. Anvil Guard's description now separates ongoing battleaxe damage reduction from timed stagger immunity.

Jotunn 2.30.1 is required on every client and server. Mod managers install the dependency; the Windows all-in-one includes it and BepInEx. Update everyone to 0.21.6 and replace both Oathbound DLLs. Read the full guide and installation steps.

Your world, your choice

Want classes without raid changes?

Sieges are enabled by default. You can restore vanilla raids and keep all classes, EXP and talents.

  1. Launch once to generate the config. Close Valheim normally, or save and stop your dedicated server.
  2. Open BepInEx/config/local.warrior.rpg.cfg and change the existing setting to:
[Sieges]
Enabled = false

Save the file and restart the game or server. In multiplayer, edit the server's file, restart the server and reconnect. A client setting cannot override the host.

This restores vanilla random raids; it does not disable vanilla raids or change world raid frequency. Existing sieges end as their areas load, with no victory loot. Settings apply at world startup.

Thirteen ways to meet the wilds.

Huscarl

Make your stand.

Turn blocks and close combat into opportunities, then shout the field clear.

  • Warcry: stagger up to six nearby enemies and weaken their next attack.
  • Unlock critical hits, bleeding strikes and ripostes.
  • Push back with a block, take an extra midair jump, heal from melee kills and reflect damage.

Shieldbearer

Hold the wall.

Fight behind a shield and share its protection with the people beside you.

  • Stand Fast: eight seconds of 30% less damage and no new staggers, with 15% for nearby allies.
  • Turn successful blocks into counters and nearby aid.
  • Requires a shield in hand.

Valkyrie

Strike from above.

Take the fight to the air and come down where you are needed.

  • Call the Spear: conjure and throw a spear with none equipped, priced in stamina.
  • Gain an extra midair jump, with empowered airborne and landing strikes.
  • Heal allies after melee kills and absorb fall damage.

Ranger

Find your opening.

Keep your distance, place your shots, and move with purpose.

  • Piercing Shot: a conjured arrow that passes through up to four enemies in a line.
  • Build same-target hits into a critical shot, with bleeding, knockback and ricochet.
  • Dodge then shoot to recover stamina, and soften a hard landing.

Mage

Kindle your power.

Build your Eitr reserve before learning elemental spells. Earn your first capstone, then cast without a staff.

  • Unlock six spells across fire, frost and lightning.
  • Fire burns, frost controls and lightning spreads: each element is bought once and read by both of its spells.
  • Reach your first spell at level 6.
  • Gain up to 85 Eitr before food, with native regeneration.

Warlock

Bind a darker oath.

Trade blood and Eitr for wards, skeleton allies and curses.

  • Unlock six blood spells, from Blood Ward to Wither.
  • Siphon drains health, and Wither weakens an enemy's attacks.
  • The forked lanes raise the rate, not the price: more bound dead, standing longer, for the same Eitr and the same offering.
  • A refused cast now says what blocked it, and a paid cast keeps the enemy you aimed at.

Rogue

Strike from the shadows.

Build around stealth, opening strikes and evasive fighting.

  • Vanish: nearby enemies lose track of you, and your next melee hit counts as an unalerted one.
  • Shields and most two-handed weapons are restricted; bows and pickaxes are allowed.

Monk

Trust your fists.

Develop unarmed combat through a dedicated talent tree.

  • Clear Mind: eight seconds of free, harder-hitting punches with double stagger.
  • Claws are allowed; other weapons and shields are restricted.
  • Bare-handed gathering starts at tool tier one and gains another tier every five Monk levels. Gathering also trains the fist skill.

Hunter

Never hunt alone.

Call a permanent wolf companion that grows with your level.

  • Set Upon: aim at an enemy and press the companion key to send the wolf in. No talent point, and it works from level one.
  • Field Mending: crouch and press the companion key to restore 75% of its health.
  • Its stat talents are percentages, so they stay useful at every level.
  • Resummon your wolf after a 120-second death cooldown.

Berserker

Earn your fury.

Equip paired axes, including Early Axes, to discover this class.

  • Whirlwind: strike up to five enemies around you with heavy stagger and knockback.
  • Paired axes in combat, plus a single axe or any pickaxe for gathering; shields and every other weapon family are refused.

Highlander

Wait for the killing blow.

Discover the greatsword oath by equipping a two-handed sword. Time heavy swings, mark prey and execute weakened enemies.

  • The Headsman's Swing: one heavy strike, doubled against a failing target.
  • Mortal Wound, stagger punishment and executions that can spread to other dying enemies.
  • Single axes and pickaxes remain available for gathering.

Breaker

Take their footing.

Equip a two-handed axe to discover the oath that replaces Raider. Build Fracture, force a stagger and cash the marks in with Shatter.

  • Sunder: slam the ground to damage, stagger and fracture up to six enemies within 8 metres.
  • Spread stagger openings and resist knockback.
  • Battleaxes for combat; pickaxes for mining.

Dragonsworn · Experimental

Let the sky gather.

Carry a dragon tear to discover a young dragon companion. Let the whelp climb, then spend its altitude on a frost dive.

  • Stoop: altitude powers the dive instead of a fixed cooldown.
  • Develop rime, frost resistance and bonuses for holding the ceiling.
  • Included for feedback; companion behaviour and balance still need in-game review.

Capstones have conditions, limits and cooldowns. Early bonuses stay modest; balance is still being playtested.

Ranger's talent tree in Valheim, with six branches ending in capstones
The Ranger talent web from an earlier build. Every class has its own tree to pan, zoom and hover.

Spells and abilities, on one key.

Mage's six capstones unlock Ember Bolt, Frost Volley, Stormburst, Cinder Barrage, Frost Nova and Chain Lightning, and Warlock's unlock Blood Ward, Raise Guardian, Raise Archer, Siphon, Crimson Pact and Wither. Combat spells have costs and cooldowns. Learning a Warlock summon also unlocks free Unsummon and Teleport Summons to Me commands. Earn the early levels with your usual weapons; class spells begin at capstones.

Mage and Warlock: hold B and click an unlocked spell, release B, then press H to cast at your crosshair. Other classes use H for their ability or companion. Hunter orders its wolf; Dragonsworn orders its whelp. The HUD line and spellbook show the prompts, keys are configurable, and normal weapon attacks stay available between casts.

Rebind in Settings > Controls > Keyboard & Mouse. Spell selection, casting and companion actions have their own rows. Existing custom bindings carry over. The same keys remain available in BepInEx/config/local.warrior.rpg.cfg.

Class Eitr adds to food bonuses. Switching does not refill Eitr or reset cooldowns. A refused cast now tells you what blocked it, an interrupted release says so, and a paid Siphon or Wither still strikes the enemy you aimed at if it leaves your crosshair during the windup.

Mage's talent tree in Valheim, with the Ember Bolt capstone tooltip showing its spell effect and Eitr cost
Mage starts with small bonuses and Eitr reserves. Spells wait at the ends of all six branches; this capture predates the forked trees.

Your progress follows your oath.

  1. Visit the Oathstone just outside the starting sacrificial-stone circle. Choose a class from the searchable browser. Equipping paired axes first discovers Berserker.
  2. Defeat enemies for EXP. Different creatures grant different rewards. Only the credited killer's active class gains EXP.
  3. Spend a point each time you level up. Return to the stone to learn talents. All thirteen trees run 79 nodes, and a full tree is affordable at the level 80 cap.
  4. Switch freely. A levelled Huscarl can become a fresh level 1 Ranger, then return to their fully preserved progress.

Vanilla skills continue to progress. Rogue, Monk and Berserker have equipment restrictions while active. A subtle class, level and XP bar sits below health. EXP notices are brief, and level-ups use Valheim's native yellow burst.

Oathbound class browser with search, filters, scrollbar and separate class progress
The searchable class browser, shown in an earlier build. The current release includes thirteen oaths with separate progress.

Every seventh night runs red.

Oathbound adds one named night on top of Valheim's own cycle. Every seventh night the moon turns red: enemies notice you from much further away, your noise carries further, and what spawns is likelier to carry stars. Ordinary nights are untouched, and sneaking stays exactly as proportionally effective as it was.

The server owns the schedule and publishes it when you connect. [BloodMoon] in the config holds Enabled, Interval, SenseMultiplier and StarMultiplier. A siege storm keeps its rain and turns red under the blood moon. Beds are blocked for the first ninety seconds of a red night.

Optional sieges. A reason to defend.

Two assault stages lead to a named, high-star commander. Twenty-four warbands bring varied enemies, portal objectives and rewards, with danger rising by biome. Meadows raids cause reduced but real building damage; later-biome portals need serious protection.

Raid areas and enemies appear on the map. Stalled commanders can bring sparse, warned lightning with storm effects and sound. Engage the attackers, defend portal approaches and defeat the commander to end the siege.

Vanilla raid timing and world frequency settings still apply. Portal travel does not trigger raids. If everyone leaves, the siege pauses at the base until players return, with no unattended destruction.

A stone or a button. Your choice.

Prefer class access anywhere? In the same config, set:

[Classes]
AccessMode = MenuButton

Save and restart. A Classes button below the inventory grid replaces the Oathstone and opens the same panel. All progress is preserved. The default is Oathstone; the host controls this setting in multiplayer.

The Windows all-in-one includes BepInEx and Jotunn. Standalone users must install both dependencies separately. Back up characters and worlds first. Older progression save formats refund spent talent points once while keeping class EXP and levels; Raider progress becomes Breaker progress. Saves already on format 7 are not refunded again. Older releases cannot read the new save format. Balance, talents and compatibility may change during development.

Before you set out.

How do I install it?

Close Valheim. For the Windows all-in-one, extract the ZIP directly into the folder containing valheim.exe, merging folders when asked. Start through Steam. For the standalone, install BepInEx and Jotunn 2.30.1 first, then merge the included BepInEx folder into your game directory. The full guide covers upgrades and multiplayer.

Can we play together?

Yes. Install this same 0.21.6 release on the server and every participating client. Install Jotunn on every machine too. Jotunn names the mod and versions when it rejects an incompatible minor release. The new handshake and server-setting sync still need a full multiplayer check. Use the appropriate Linux loader on Linux servers; the Windows bundle is for Windows clients. Crossplay and Xbox are not verified. Broad compatibility with other mods is still being tested.

What happens when I die?

You lose half of the active class's progress toward its next level, rounded up. You never lose a class level, learned talent or unspent point. Your other classes keep all their progress. Valheim's own death consequences still apply.

Can I change class or reset talents?

Return to the Oathstone to switch at any time, or use the inventory Classes button if your host enables MenuButton access. Each class keeps a separate record. The tree also offers a talent reset with confirmation; it refunds the active class's purchases without resetting its level.

Is this finished?

No. This is an early playable build for feedback. Dragonsworn is experimental and its companion still needs an in-game review. Core progression checks have passed, but long-term balance, controller-only menus and broad mod compatibility still need playtesting. Keep a character backup: older releases cannot read the new progression save format. Native burning can lose kill attribution on its final tick, so those deaths may not award class EXP.
